Context

St Peter’s school was founded in 1870 and serves the residents of the market town of Huntingdon, around 12 miles north of Cambridge, and the surrounding villages. St Peter’s prides itself on its comprehensive history and we are enthusiastic about continuing to offer excellence in education to all students regardless of their background or ability.

We have around 1,100 students on the school roll including our very successful 6^th form. The majority of our students live within walking distance of the school with only a small minority travelling to school by bus or car.

In September 2016 St Peter’s joined The Cam Academy Trust.This local and successful academy trust includes three other secondary schools (Comberton Village College, Cambourne Village College and Melbourn Village College) as well as four primary phase schools (Gamlingay Village Primary, Hartford Infant School, Hartford Junior School, Jeavons Wood Primary School, Cambourne). This collaborative partnership gives our staff and students a growing range of opportunities to develop and broaden their experience.

St Peter’s School is a rapidly improving school as recognised by our ‘Good’ judgement from Ofsted in March 2017.  Our students are well behaved, ‘well mannered, respectful and considerate towards each other and staff‘(Ofsted March 2017). They are positive about their learning and this is demonstrated by their attendance which is higher than similar schools.  Students arrive on time to lessons, ‘follow instructions well, settle quickly to work’ (Ofsted March 2017) and are willing to learn.  ‘Pupils’ behaviour for learning and their attitudes towards learning are good’ (Ofsted March 2017).

What our students continue to need is access to the best teachers who can build on this enthusiasm and inspire them to Learn, Aspire and Exceed.

To support our staff a comprehensive professional development programme is run with a significant proportion delivered by our own staff who are proven effective practitioners with knowledge of effective teaching strategies that engage, stretch and challenge our students.   We work in close co-operation with two local Teaching School Alliances in order to add breadth to our professional development activities and staff can attend up to, on average, 4 sessions of CPD a week.

Curriculum

The school day runs from 8:35 until 3:05 with 5 60 minute lessons a day. There are a wide range of extra-curricular activities available for staff and students at breaks, lunchtimes and afterschool to encourage participation, enjoyment and the opportunity to learn new skills.
